Introducing the DELTA podcast series

by Rod Cullen

Dr Rod Cullen is Reader in Digital Education based in the Digital Education Team, Principal Fellow of AdvanceHE and a Lead Innovation Scholar.

Dr Rod Cullen introduces this new video podcast series exploring the DELTA strategy at Manchester Met. In this opening episode, he explains why the university developed DELTA in the first place. Drawing on student data, Rod highlights that many students are parents, carers, part time workers, or managing disabilities, meaning they often cannot prioritise rigid academic structures over the demands of their daily lives. He outlines the six principles of digital flexibility and the learning spaces framework, showing how Moodle and Teams can help students learn when and where they need to. Rod describes flexible active learning as a compassionate approach to teaching that recognises students’ real circumstances. Future episodes will feature conversations with colleagues across the university about how they’re putting DELTA into practice.
