The MMU(sical) Personal and Professional Development (PPD) short course: An autoethnographical reflection on the course design and initial pilot

by Carly Jacobs

Dr Carly Jacobs is a senior lecturer in Psychology. Her passions include personal development and belonging and mattering, as well as musical theatre.

Dr Carly Jacobs demonstrates an innovative and creative way of improving students’ personal and professional development skills, as well as their sense of belonging and connection to the University through her MMU(sical) Personal and Professional Development (PPD) short course.

This intervention is a six week, 2 hours per week, extra-curricular offering combining the discursive analysis of song lyrics, linked to students’ reflective development of themselves, alongside the community ethos of a musical theatre company with the aim of increasing the students’ competence, relatedness and autonomy in line with Self Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Stone et al., 2009).

Carly explains the format of the weekly sessions and reflects on her experiences with the initial pilot. The overall aim of this presentation is to explain the MMU(sical) PPD short course to viewers, with the hope of inspiring educators to run this intervention in their own settings.
